Joburg East Express, first distributed in 2004, developed from the Bedfordview and Edenvale News with the aim to serve specifically the residents of the Johannesburg East suburbs. The first edition of the EXPRESS was published on January 14, 2004 and despite numerous challenges during its first year of existence this newspaper has grown into a known and valued community newspaper to its readers. The paper is distributed from the borders of Ellis Park to Kensington to Cyrildene to Malvern.

Several issues exposed by the EXPRESS resulted in positive changes for the communities it serves. Already during its first year of existence, the EXPRESS’ exposé on the unacceptable working conditions at Cleveland Police Station which resulted in the Department of Labour closing certain sections of the station until these were renovated to meet the requirements of acceptable working conditions.
